The Baby

Joseph learns that his son and his companion have just perished in an accident. They were expecting a child via a surrogate mother in Belgium. What will become of their future baby? Is Joseph the legitimate grandfather? Carried by the promise of this birth which will prolong the existence of his son, the sexagenarian goes to meet the young Flemish woman with a fierce and indomitable character. 

• The film … shatters the conventional distribution of roles within the marital cell, celebrating recomposition and repair… It offers Fabrice Luchini a beautiful character, the opportunity to get out of his media character as a literary boaster to roam buried territories…

• This is not the first time that the filmmaker has taken a more or less direct interest in death… a hymn to filiation and the continuity of life…  Nicloux is filming something coherent… Fabrice Luchini …is very convincing, elegantly allowing his partner Maud Taquin to shine, in a much more exuberant vein.  .. In La Petite… there is no shame in taking on the certain emotion that it exhales.
