In Borneo, near the tropical forest, Kéria rescues and takes in a baby orangutan found on the plantation where her father works. At the same moment, her cousin Selaï finds refuge with them to escape the raging conflict that pits his nomadic family against the multinationals that enrich themselves through deforestation. Together, Kéria, Selaï and the baby orangutan called Oshi face countless obstacles in the fight against the destruction of the forest. Their universe is threatened by human stupidity and greed, a calamity that our protagonists try to confront by dreaming of a world that would be more just and more respectful of nature. In the same way, Kéria will get to discover and revalue her origins and her deepest self. Cineuropa

A Heartfelt and Galvanizing Animated Film Calls for Environmental Protection The latest from ‘My Life as a Zucchini’ director Claude Barras is about a group of Indigenous people trying to protect their land from rampant deforestation. As Ma vie de courgette, Barras does not condescend to or patronize his youngest audience members. Savages, (…) is uncompromising in its messaging, deceptively spare in its instruction and absolutely gorgeous to look at.

The Hollywood Reporter

Small scenes involving colorful animals, from panthers to spiders to snakes, provide welcome short breaks from the adventures of Kéria and the others, these wordless encounters providing humor and a bit of a diversion for the youngest audiences from the scenes verbalizing Sauvages‘message and from figuring out (although it’s not that hard) who the real ‘savages’ from the title are.
