CARLTON CINEMA – 20 CARLTON Street – TORONTO
GRAND PUBLIC FESTIVAL 2026
A francophone lineup that questions surveillance, disinformation, and resistance — from documentary to dystopian thriller.
See. Doubt. Resist
Raoul Peck’s *Orwell: 2+2=5* opens the door for inspiration for the Festival Grand Public 2026 programming, exploring the themes of the manipulation of truth, the control of bodies and minds, disinformation, and acts of resistance…
This francophone selection, with its varied approaches, explores the visionary dimension of Orwellian thought — could fiction become dangerous reality in our society?
Besides the chilling echo of his well-known slogans, Ignorance is strength, Freedom is slavery, War is peace, Orwell’s work reflected on social classes inequality, injustice, colonialism and sexual orientation…
Coming from France, from Africa and the Maghreb, from Belgium and Quebec, these films are presented in their original version with English subtitles, followed by post-screening discussions with expert guests on the subject.
The selection committee — made up of Cécile Robertson, Hadley Foucher, and Marcelle Lean — is working tirelessly to bring you the best francophone films on these subjects and others.
Stay tuned.
