Paris, the 1920s. Journalist Jean Luchaire and German intellectual Otto Abetz, both committed pacifists, campaign together for Franco-German reconciliation. But the Nazis’ rise to power gradually turns their ideals into compromise: once he becomes Germany’s ambassador to Paris during the Occupation, Abetz draws Luchaire — who founds the collaborationist newspaper Les Nouveaux Temps — into the machinery of collaboration. His daughter Corinne, a young actress once destined for a brilliant career and later a fixture of occupied Paris society, is swept up in her father’s downfall. Told through Corinne’s postwar memories, the film recounts the true story of a family caught between light and shadow, leading to the postwar trial that seals their fate.
